Araripe Geopark receives its third green card

Araripe Geopark (AG) received on September, 23, the third green card, the highest certification granted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) during the 15TH European Geoparks Conference, held in Seville, Spain. This recognition ensures the permanence and participation of Ceará and Cariri among the 141 sustainable destinations in the world and the UNESCO-certified programs.

The achievement was received by the Culture Sector Coordinator of the Araripe Geopark (AG), Professor José Patrício Pereira Melo. According to Patrício, Cariri grew up and gained great recognition as a tourist destination, in many visits by foreigners. "So far this recognition translates into the Green Card, we have a lot to celebrate and work on," he said.

The evaluation of a Geopark is carried out every four years by the UNESCO Geopark Council. In July, from 17 to 20, the AG was evaluated by two technicians, geologists Pablo Rivas, from Spain, and Tran Tan Van, from Vietnam. In total, five geosites were visited in four cities of Cariri: Colina do Horto, Pontal da Santa Cruz, Batateiras, Ponte de Pedra and Pedra  Cariri. They also knew the work of some partners such as Arajara Park, Escola de Saberes of Barbalha , IU-á hotel, Casa Grande Foundation, Espedito Seleiro, Lira Nordestina and Mestre Noza and had the opportunity to visit the Center for Interpretation and Environmental Education of the Araripe Geopark, an equipment that was reopened during the Expocrato period.

The territory of  Geoparque Cânions do Sul Project is composed of seven municipalities in two states of southern Brazil, with a total area of 2,830 km2 and about 73,000 inhabitants. The project includes the municipalities of Cambará do Sul, Mampituba, and Torres, in Rio Grande do Sul; and Jacinto Machado, Morro Grande, Praia Grande and Timbé do Sul, in Santa Catarina.

The exuberance of the natural heritage attracts attention in the territory. Located in  Serra Geral, the canyons line the plateau and the coastal plain, with slopes reaching 1000 meters and are less than 50 kilometers from the sea. The region has numerous waterfalls, natural pools, lagoons, and rivers, as well as dune fields and beaches. In this scenario of singular beauty, there are also several paleolodges, shelters excavated by extinct animals that lived more than 10,000 years ago. The territory also reveals a rich cultural heritage, with special emphasis on indigenous and quilombolas culture, and Azorean, German and Italian immigrants, passing through the remarkable stumbling movement in the region.

The Intermunicipal Consortium Caminhos dos Cânions do Sul is responsible for the management of the Project and the technical team, composed by representatives of all municipalities. One of the highlights of the Geopark Project is the mobilization of the school community, with educational activities carried out in all schools of the municipal school system of the seven municipalities. At the moment, the professionals involved in the Project are dedicated to the preparation of the application dossier, the structuring of the geoguide and the continuity of the dissemination process for the community's commitment to the importance of the Project for the sustainable development of the region.
