Geosite “Colina do Horto”: a place of prayer and work

On July 22, the city where is located the Geosite "Colina do Horto", Juazeiro, was celebrated 104 years of political emancipation. This event stems from a series of processes, initially conflicting. A flagship event which can represent this fact was the Sedition Juazeiro of the year 1911 in which one can view the actions of one of the individuals who would be part of the construction of the city's identity: priest Cicero Romao Batista.

It is currently impossible to try to dissociate the Juazeiro the image of priest Cicero, both walk throughout this period side by side influencing the economy, politics and culture of the region. The Juazeiro do Norte city covers an area of 248km². It is located 528km from the state capital of Ceará, Fortaleza, and has a population of 249,936 inhabitants, according to IBGE census conducted in 2010. To the south of Ceará the municipality is on the territory of the Geopark Araripe, with Geosite "Colina do Horto". This geosite stands out for its cultural uniqueness, for there is the statue of priest Cicero, the living museum that tells parts of his story and the supposed miracles that he has given the Holy Sepulchre, the place of prayer and faith of thousands of pilgrims and the Wall of 1914 Sedition, which has a bit of history from the time of "cangaceiros"who roamed the region in search of territory domain.

The Geosite Colina do Horto, in terms of their geological aspect, have in their formation the oldest rocks in the region and beyond the religious context, the geosite is in the script of many scholars for their geological, scientific and cultural value. From village to city, Juazeiro has taken a wide ratio, especially when it comes to vertical integration. It is one of the cities in the interior which has the busiest economy with the installation of large wholesalers and auto companies, attracting investments also for hotel chain, from which the focus goes beyond attention to the religious tourism, promoting tourism in neighboring municipalities and strengthening regional development.
