UNIRIO minister "geo workshop" fossil replicas to trainees of environmental education

The activities were composed of theoretical and practical classes taught by
PhD in Paleontology, Professor Deusana Maria da Costa Machado

The UNIRIO in partnership with the Geopark Araripe held this Wednesday, August 4, 2015, the Interpretation Centre and Environmental Education Geopark Araripe, Crato / EC, a "geo workshop" with Fossil and Fossilization theme. The theoretical part was taught by professor and doctor of paleontology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Deusana Maria da Costa Machado, currently a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO). During the event, she spoke about the many types of fossils, their classification, where they are located, which belong period, clarified on the definition of fossils as well as paleontology operates.

The target audience of "geo workshop" was the engineers and trainees students Geopark Araripe, especially those operating in the environmental education sector.
On a practical point, the participants were asked to classify some replicas of fossils, distributing them in geological time column and in the sedimentary basins of Brazil, with the help of catalogs and other educational resources developed by the team responsible for the event. There was also a practical demonstration of how they can be made, alternatively, replicas of fossils, targeting the use of materials.

The practice session was given by students UNIRIO: Isabelle Berincosa Santos, Beatriz Marino Hörmanseder, lilaz Beatriz Monteiro Santos, Ana Carolina Santana de Figueiredo, graduation students of the course of Biological Sciences. The students were monitoring the doctoral student in Museology and Heritage, Josiane Kunzler and the Professor of UNIRIO, Deusana Maria da Costa Machado.

A "geo workshop" stood out mainly to show the vast diversity of fossils in Brazil, the importance of their preservation and the various ways that studies of the same can be performed either through playful way with songs and stories or scientific.

Geopark Araripe supports the XXIV Congress
Brazilian Paleontology hosted by URCA

Event brought together over 500 national and international researchers, with heavy

support from coordinators Geopark Araripe, researchers URCA and Arouca Geopark (Portugal)

The opening of the XXIV Brazilian Congress of Paleontology occurred during the last week was attended by the Scientific Coordinator of the Arouca Geopark, Portugal Professor Arthur Sá. He is also a member of UNESCO evaluators group for deployment or geoparks revaluation.

By being an active contributor to the Geopark Araripe since 2009/2010, Arthur Sá participated in this conference emphasizing the importance of an event of such magnitude for the existence of Geopark Araripe, which has its roots thanks to paleontological records Cariri Region. In an interview with the Geopark Araripe Communication Team, he lamented the sad reality of fossil trafficking and "geoética of work, not compactuation of researchers and the fundamental role of the Geopark itself" that repeated criminal actions of this aspect setting.

The Congress was also attended by the President of the Museum of Paleontology Regional Cariri University Professor Plácido Cidade Nuvens, who is also former rector of the Regional University of Cariri and the Vice President of the Museum, a paleontologist at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Juliana Sayão. They registered the participation of more than 500 national and international researchers during this event.

Among the researchers can highlight the Doctor Paleontology, Mitsuru Arai, one of the speakers at the Congress, which claimed to be "always a great pleasure to be in the Cariri Region" due to peculiarly preserved diversity of fossils and found in the Sedimentary Basin of Araripe . at the same time, he expressed delight with the progress of Geopark Araripe, as on his last visit had seen its embryonic development.

The professor at the State University of Paraíba, Juvandi de Souza Santos, postdoctoral fellow Archaeologist, Historian and Geographer, congratulated the event organizers and the Araripe Geopark. During his speech, he highlighted the Interpretation Centre for Environmental Education with being attractive and well organized.

Thus, it can be concluded that the balance was intensely positive for the participants of the event, both the URCA as the various regions of Brazil and abroad.

VII International Conference

about Geoparks in England

Geology for experts and lay people, as well as eco-adventures, culture, arts

on wildlife and geoparks in general will be the main topics discussed

Between 27 and 30 September 2016 will take place VII International Conference on Geoparks in Torquay (southern England), the Riviera International Conference Centre, with the support of UNESCO. The topics to be discussed will address the geology for experts and lay people, eco adventure, culture, arts on wildlife and geoparks in general.

The Conference estimates include the participation of 1,000 delegates that make up the Global Geoparks Network, or Global Geopark Network (GGN), assisted by UNESCO. The GGN is composed at present by 111 geoparks distributed in 34 countries, and the Araripe Geopark, the first in the Americas and unique in their characterization.

The Global Network provides a platform for active cooperation between experts and practitioners in geological heritage. And through this exchange between partners, important national geological sites gain worldwide recognition and contributions with ideas for sustainable development of the region in which the geopark is located.

A geopark is an institution that is characterized by their sites of great geological value, biological, historical, archaeological, paleontological and cultural as well with activities in support of community awareness.

Contrary to what most think, the geoparks has not fiscalizatória function, has no legal or institutional power for this purpose. However, the function of this is shown to be essential in the process of preservation and conservation of certain assets. The purpose of the event is the meeting of representatives of all geoparks, for the exchange of knowledge and experiences.
