Araripe Geopark attends the 5th Latin American and Caribbean Geoparks Symposium in Uruguay

Araripe Geopark (AG) participated in the Latin American and Caribbean Geoparks Symposium in Uruguay from November 4th to 8th, represented by Professor Dr. Neuma Galvão, Coordinator of the Environmental Education sector. The event takes place at the facilities of the State Department of Flores, where is located the UNESCO World Palace Caves Geopark.

The Geoparque Grutas del Palacio is the second Latin American geopark to join the Global Network in 2013 and is a founding member of the Latin American and Caribbean Geopark Network (www.redgeolac.org).

Presentations and discussions about the region's Geoparks and field visits to the UNESCO World Geopark Grutas del Palacio are being held during the symposium, focusing on pillar issues such as geo-conservation of geological heritage, geo-education and geotourism. Parallel to the Symposium that  is taking place at the 9th Uruguayan Congress of Geology.

Araripe Geopark’s participation in the Knowledge Fair is successful with Kariri Giants exhibition a flight through Paleoarte

For the second year, Araripe Geopark participated, on October 16-19, the 2019 Knowledge Fair (FdC3), which took place at Ceará Event Center. During the four days, young people of all ages had contact with some specimens of pterosaurs and dinosaurs that inhabited the Cariri Region, besides knowing a little more about the local fauna, with the painting of Araripe Manakin or even immersing themselves in this pre-historic universe when attending the Fossil Replica Workshop.

More than 600 people visited the Araripe Geopark fair stand, which once again had the famous Kariri Giants exhibit - a Paleoarte flight. The young people were very excited to know some pterosaur specimens that had been flying over Cariri in Ceará 110 million years ago, were very curious to know the animals, to know what their eating, habits and life. Also, they had a conversation with artist Francisco dos Santos, author of the exhibition, and Edvânia Martins, the curator.

Francisco dos Santos considered participating for the second time at the fair with great joy, recognition from the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Higher Education (Secitece), who invited him. “This proves the importance that the exhibition is having in shaping a new way of seeing the paleontological values of our region. Seeing the public ecstatic when contemplating the work is priceless,” he said.

The Fossil Replica Workshop and the Manakin's Painting were a separate attraction. Many of the visitors wanted to carve the endemic bird of Cariri on the body and took home the replica produced during the workshop. The Geopark team interacted with visitors by distributing flyers and presenting the Geopark project. All activities at the Araripe Geopark stand were supported by the Extension Rector of the Regional University of Cariri (URCA).

Araripe Geopark Racing Circuit is one of the most important sporting events in the region.

Resistance, strength and resilience, these three words describe the Araripe Geopark Crato Stage Racing Circuit, held on Sunday morning (10/20). More than 400 athletes from Ceará, Pernambuco, Piaui, Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasilia and a Slovakian competitor challenged their limits in the Trail Run (07km and 14km) and Moutain Bike XCO 04km circuit.

The start was at Batateiras Geosite arriving at Quinta dos Lobos Eventos space, a hard course, with natural obstacles, but still allowed the competitors to enjoy the landscapes of Araripe Plateau and have contact with nature.

The highlight, according to the Executive Director of Araripe Geopark, Nivaldo Soares, was the possibilities for athletes to contemplate the landscape of Araripe Plateau. He evaluated as positive this stage of the event, which exceeded the number of participants, and highlighted the interest of people in participating in the race. "We have realized that more and more people value

this lifestyle that only benefits," he said.

For the Brasilian competitor, Cícero Alves Militão, the weather, which was milder due to the rain that fell the night before, helped the athletes. Participating for the first time in the Circuit, he congratulated the organization of the event, highlighting the route, which for him was very well chosen.

Imbabura UNESCO World Geopark

Imbabura's UNESCO World Geopark is essentially distinguished by its geological features: volcanic complexes such as Imbabura, Mojanda, Cotacachi - Cuicocha and Chachimbiro converge with lakes or lagoons, virtually everywhere; waterfalls, water fountains, different weather floors and geomorphological attractions. This heritage is strengthened and made more attractive by its complementarity with the ethnic, cultural, archaeological, gastronomic and productive diversity of its peoples.

Imbabura covers the entire territory of Imbabura Province and can be found in the Republic of Ecuador in South America; north of the Interandina region. It has an approximate area of 4,700 km2. It is organized in 6 cantons: Ibarra, provincial capital, founded in 1606; Otavalo, Cotacachi, Antonio Ante, Urcuquí and Pimampiro.

At the end of 2014, the province of Imbabura requested the designation of the UNESCO World Geopark, as an initiative sponsored by the Zonal Coordinations of the Ministry of Tourism and the National Secretariat of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MHESI). Margarete Hart, researcher at the Prometheus Program in Spain, was responsible for the process. Meet the UNESCO World Geopark of Imbabura! Visit the site: http://geoparque.imbabura.gob.ec/.
