The organizing committee of the 5th Brazilian Symposium on Geological Heritage (SBPG) decided to extend the submission of abstracts for the event. Participants will now be able to submit their work until 15th July.
The event will take place on the 14th to the 18th of October 2019 in the Crato city. In this, there will be a historical gathering of Brazilian researchers and academics in its first Geopark, the Araripe Geopark. The SBPG aims to work on issues related to geoconservation, geological heritage, geodiversity, geotourism, and geoparks.
Abstracts will be accepted in oral or panel format, which will be included in the annals of the 5th SBPG in PDF. So if you are interested in participating in the event and have not yet published the summary, enjoy it. There is still time.

Geopark will be evaluated between July 17th and 20th

Araripe Geopark (GA) will receive technicians to evaluate the project between July 17th and 20th. The evaluators will fulfill an intense schedule that includes the field of geosites, museums, a meeting with a team of Geospark and partners, among other activities.
For the GA team, it is a moment of great expectation. "We are expecting them to come, but with the awareness that a good job has been done for the last four years. When they arrive here they will see this, "said the executive director of GA, Nivaldo Soares. The mission will be carried out by specialists in Geoparks of UNESCO and geology, Pablo Rivas Palomo (Spain) and Trân Tân Văn (Vietnam). The Geoparks Bureau Global Council of UNESCO appointed the technicians on the last day 22 May.

The global geoparks quality assessment of UNESCO is held every four years to ensure the improvement of the activities developed in Geoparks environments. It is the instrument that allows Geoparks to be revalidated by acquiring the green seal to remain in the Unesco Global Geoparks program. This evaluation will be examined the actions performed by GA in the territory in the quadrennium, but also projects, dissemination of geosciences, management of geosites, among other aspects.

After six years of Araripe Geopark encourage schools and community with the GEA Terra-Mãe project, this year there will be a new format. The present intention offers a unique opportunity for students, teachers, managers and community representation, so that they can develop educational actions, bring people together, perform interventions and show improvements in the environment of collective use and public services (such as streets, squares, walls, buildings, popular houses, schools, trails, rainwater drainage, wasteland and more). Also, the project seeks to act with the reduction of drinking water waste, recycling of materials, environmental protection, among others. It will all happen through meetings, lectures, and workshops that will have as facilitators of the members of Araripe Geopark (coordinators, technicians, and fellows) according to the timetable to be built with those involved in this cause.
The GEA Terra-Mãe, contest and show of actions and necklaces, is a UNESCO initiative, used by the Global Network of Geoparks-GGN. In Brazil, the Worldwide Araripe Geopark of UNESCO is, to date, the only member of this network. This has been used in the themes recommended by the 17 UNESCO objectives, which is the theme "Cities and Sustainable Communities", the 11th objective of the agenda 2030.
The project will be developed in 6 municipalities that compose the territory of the Araripe Geopark (Crato, Juazeiro do Norte, Barbalha, Missão Velha, Nova Olinda, and Santana do Cariri). Of these municipalities, 10 schools of each will participate in the intervention.

Geosites Receive Improvements

To serve better the visitors, Araripe Geopark is conducting a series of actions to revitalize the nine geosites. Ponte de Pedra, Pedra Cariri (Nova Olinda), and Parque dos Pterossauros (Santana do Cariri) have already received improvements. Colina do Horto (Juazeiro do Norte), Cachoeira de Missão Velha, Floresta Petrificada (Missão Velha) and Batateiras (Crato) are in the final stage of inspection, and beginning of the executive phase. The process has no date to be completed, but according to Rafael Celestino, coordinator of the geoconservation sector, it is expected that by the end of the semester the six geosites cited are up to date.

The action is being carried out in cooperation with the Animal Protection Union and the Environment (UPAMA) of Crato. Among the improvements are the placement of benches, finishing of ladders, cleaning services and updating of the information boards.

The geosites Parque dos Pterosauros (Santana do Cariri), Riacho do Meio (Barbalha) await administrative resolutions so that they can also be reconditioned.
