Holiday Colonies of Araripe Geopark is a theme in a book chapter

With the theme "Educational practices in the holiday colonies of Araripe Geopark " was published an article about the holiday colonies held by Araripe Geopark in the book "Educação do Século XXI" of Editora Poisson. The work is authored by Alexsandra Maria da Silva, Lazaro Ranieri de Macêdo, Liviane Maria dos Santos, Pedrina França Pereira, and Maria Neuma Clemente Galvão.

The holiday colonies of the Araripe Geopark are presented at work as a means of developing recreational activities provided to children and adolescents between six to fourteen years of age educational practices through games, pranks, workshops, and tours to know the natural riches of the region.

The results showed that the holiday colonies have variety in their activities, and try to rescue games and jokes that are being forgotten by the new generations. They work with dynamics and educational workshops, showing the importance of recycling, caring for the environment and conserving and preserving nature.

The Holiday Colonies project integrates the playful to the educational role in the period of school holidays, and even allows children and teenagers to know the riches of the region and to disclose it. The educational activities developed in this action allow participants and trainees a teaching and learning process outside the school context.

Working Group seeks to implement shared management at Riacho do Meio geosite in Barbalha

The Working Group (WG), from Riacho do Meio geosite, in Barbalha, has been developing a series of actions to improve the management of the site through lectures, actions, and interventions. The group met with the community and institutions on March 15th to discuss the importance of the Middle Creek to the Cariri region.

Beginning the work, a lecture was held that took place on March 29th, in which one can perceive the reality and the needs of the site. The group verified there was a need to improve the water supply conditions of the communities surrounding the geosite. From these actions, the mayor of the municipality of Barbalha, Argemiro Sampaio Neto, was committed to improving these conditions. With the commitment made by the City Hall, the executive direction of Araripe Geopark and the rectory of URCA proposed the conclusion of a cooperation term for the implementation of shared management with the city hall. The proposal was accepted and also by the residents of the surrounding area.

Another point discussed in the meeting was the beginning of the collective construction of the management plan in areas of maintenance, administration, tourism, environmental education, communication, and marketing. The actions involve partners from various institutions for efficient and collaborative execution. In May, an articulation was made to carry out a voluntary activity of solid waste collection in the geosite with the cooperation of entities, institutions and partner communities of the Araripe Geopark.

The Working group was created from a public hearing that took place on March 15, 2019, by the City Council of Councilors of Barbalha. The creation was necessary to give referrals to the proposal of shared management of the Municipal Ecological Park and Riacho do Meio geosite, spaces for the creation and installation of the tourism and hospitality courses of the Regional University of Cariri (URCA), Barbalha.

Geopark empowers new scholarship holders

Araripe Geopark (AG) has trained the five new scholarship holders of the communication and environmental education sectors between 02 and 04 July. The new members met the Geopark technical team, the operation of the Geopark sectors and made field visits.

On the first day, lectures were held on the sectors of geoconservation, communication, executive direction, sustainable territorial development and geotourism, environmental education and the executive secretariat.

On the second day, the students made a field visit to the Batateiras geosite, in Crato, and received training on the environmental education sector, besides participating in educational workshops. On the third day of training, the new trainees had a fossil workshop and a presentation of the GEA Terra-Mãe project.

For the biology student of the Regional University of Cariri (URCA) and scholarship in the environmental education sector, Lara Victória, the experience is enriching. " I had no notion that here was working in a broad and socializing medium. Here is culture, tourism, among other things that have opened my mind. What has caught my attention is that in this sector we move with inclusion, we go to the streets and make a difference. I also found amazing that Geopark integrates the UNESCO program, be a project of URCA and have partnerships with other institutions. " For the student, Geopark represents a space to obtain a lot of knowledge. "I hope to learn a lot," she concluded.

LACRUSE researchers present the crab guaja-do-araripe

The  Crustacean Laboratory of the Semiarid researchers (LACRUSE), of the Regional University of Cariri (URCA), presented the Crab guaja-do-araripe (Kingsleya Attenboroughi) to the residents of Sítio Farias, Barbalha, last Thursday (04/07), in order to show the community the importance of preserving this species.

The crustacean, discovered in December 2018, is at the critical level of extinction and is being studied. The first specimens were found in the Arajara, district of Barbalha. The work was done in a careful manner, in order to reinsert them, observing even the process of adaptation of crabs to the water temperature.

The species was described by Allysson Pinheiro, coordinator of LACRUSE and responsible for the discovery of the species, and by researcher William Santana, from the University of the Sacred Heart (USC). The presentation of the results of the work on the distribution and abundance of the crab was important for its recognition and preservation. The master's research was funded by Geopark Araripe and had the guidance of URCA's teacher, Allysson Pinheiro.
