Geoparque Rio Coco Project

The Río Coco Geopark project is part of the territory that comprises five municipalities in the Department of Madriz, northern Nicaragua. It is an untouched territory with incredible potential and, also, its inhabitants have a living intangible cultural heritage and the most relevant geosite is the National Monument Canyon Somoto. We are waiting to be the first territory in Central America to join the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks.

One of the most important achievements in the development of the project has been the creation of the first Geopark Interpretation Center in the territory, in this space are located in different environments: Tourist information point, an auditorium for meetings and Workshops, Geopark Museum, Geopark offices, and archaeological Museum. We are developing attention to visitors and students, emphasizing the great value of the geopatrimony of the creation of interest in the geological and archaeological elements, which in the past were some of the great strangers to the villagers.
