Costões and Lagunas Geopark of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Since 2010 we have discussed the establishment of Costões and Lagunas Geopark of the State of Rio de Janeiro, RJ, in Brazil. The proposal points to the geoconservation of an area with beauty and singular geoscientific content. It was intensively discussed and culminated with the indication of an area that involves the coastal municipalities from Maricá to São Francisco de Itabapoana, with scientific, didactic, tourist, historical, prehistoric and ecological interest.

16 municipalities with an area of 10,909,588 km² are included. It is noteworthy that about 15% of the area corresponds to municipal, state or federal protected areas, as well as a mirror of ponds and lagoons.

The proposed region shows a unique geological evolution, involving 2 billion years of history and rocky outcrops framed in typologies such as speleological, stratigraphic, geomorphological, hydrogeological, history of science, petrological, paleoenvironmental, mineralogical, tectono-structural, including archaeological remains and sites of historical / cultural interest.

33 interpretative panels of the Geological Paths Project, 11 Darwin Paths and 4 elaborated by our project in 2018-19 were implemented. We ran a geology training project for public school teachers, and mascots were also prepared for our environmental education program. In 2019, we created a monthly guided walking activity that we named GeoDia with broad participation of society. On 11/22/19, we held the 1st Workshop of Costões e Lagunas Geopark of RJ.
