THE CAJÓN DEL MAIPO GEOPARK PROJECT, CHILE

The "Cajón del Maipo Geopark Project" is located in central Chile, in the mountain section of the Santiago Metropolitan Region. Its area coincides with the rural commune of San José de Maipo, covering a surface area of 4,995 km2, where less than 20,000 people live. Less than 50 kilometers away is the country's capital, Santiago, with over 7,000,000 inhabitants.

The geographical and geological features of this territory are determined by its location in the Heart of the Andes Mountain, which features active seismicity, volcanism, and reaches high altitudes, the product of its location on the subduction edge of Nazca and Latin American tectonic plates. South.

It is a territory with about 160 million years of geological history, and it stands out for its great geodiversity, with the presence of summits over 6,000 msnm, large river valleys, hundreds of glaciers, tectonic deformations and one of the oldest mining poles. from the country. This is represented in an official inventory of 40 geosites that have scientific, educational and tourist value, an ideal argument for calling this commune "The Geological Capital of Chile" in 2018.

These features have made the Cajón del Maipo one of the main tourist attractions in the country, to which thousands of national and foreign visitors come every month. You can go rafting, trekking, horse riding or mining tourism within minutes of Santiago. In addition, we have high quality hotels and restaurants.

However, this enormous wealth of heritage has not only been positive for the development of this commune, as tourism, and other industries such as mining and hydroelectricity have exploited these resources irrationally, which has damaged the environmental integrity of the territory.

For these and many other reasons, since 2017 different local actors have promoted the project that seeks to make the "Cajón del Maipo" recognized as a UNESCO world geopark. The main objectives of this initiative are to encourage scientific research, geoconservation, environmental education in local schools, and especially to achieve sustainable economic development of the local community.
